The Australian Government has invested a further $3 billion into NBN Co to upgrade the remaining fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) network across Australia.
This investment, combined with more than $800 million from NBN Co will give 95 per cent of homes and businesses the option to upgrade to full fibre or fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP).
The remaining five per cent will require further design work to confirm the appropriate upgrade path.
Work on the upgrades will begin immediately and progress in stages, with completion expected by the end of 2030.
The investment will also expand NBN Co’s existing network upgrade programs to provide access to its wholesale speeds by the end of 2025.
Ellie Sweeney, CEO at NBN Co, noted the growing number of connected devices in Australian homes and the ever-increasing data usage.
“This upgrade investment will enable us to meet the needs of Australian homes and businesses now and into the future, continuing to lift Australia’s digital participation and capability,” she said.
Additionally, funding was received from the Victorian Government to expand the FTTN to FTTP program in the state.
